Anger Management Course

The anger management pages on this site can be used as a course.

The course is designed to be offered over a period of eight 30-minute sessions.

 

Time should be set aside at the beginning of each session for the client/pupil to talk through any recent anger situations or particular anger problems they are having, and to assess whether strategies used have been successful or not.

A record should be made of successful coping strategies in the Anger Diary.

Time should be set aside at the end of each session to identify a specific strategy to be tried during the next incident of anger.

 

Session One

The session should begin with an acknowledgement by the client/pupil that he/she has a problem with anger. This may be offered readily or may require discussion or prompting.

Use the What is Anger page to explain Anger.

Introduce idea of keeping an anger diary. An A5 anger diary can be made by printing the diary sheet. The successful strategies sheet should be included.

Talk through strategies for controlling anger. Choose one or two to try and use when the client/pupil is next angry. An A5 copy ofcontrolling anger safely can also be included in the diary. (This page takes a few seconds to download, please be patient.)

 

Session Two

Use the ‘Why does Anger happen’ page to talk through why anger happens.

Talk through the ‘Personalities and Anger’ page. Invite client/pupil to identify personality traits that describe them and suggest reasons why this may be.

Talk through the ‘Displaced Anger’ page. Invite client/pupil to assess whether displacement may be a factor in his/her anger.

Remind client/pupil to maintain diary.

 

Session Three

Explain next four sessions will analyse client/pupil’s anger using diary entries. Going to begin with date and time.

Use the ‘Date and Time’ page to explain why it is important to record dates and times of anger.

The ‘Date and Time Graph’ sheet can be printed off and used to identify whether there is a link between anger and days and/or times.

 

Session Four

Remind client/pupil last session looked at dates and times. This session will look at causes of anger.

Talk through  the ‘Triggers’ page. Identify whether client/pupil’s anger is caused by situations, people, things or a combination of these.

Emphasise importance of using coping strategies.

 

Session Five

Remind client/pupil that have looked at dates and times and causes of anger. This session will look at measuring anger.

Talk through the ‘Measuring Anger’ page.

Print off and complete the ‘Measuring Anger’ worksheet.

Discuss whether extent of anger could have been modified.

 

Session Six

Remind client/pupil that have looked at dates and times, causes of and measuring anger. This session will look at thoughts and reactions.

Talk through the ‘Thoughts’ page. Encourage client/pupil to identify any familiar thoughts. Discuss alternative thoughts.

Talk through ‘Reactions’ page.

Re-visit ‘Controlling Anger Safely’.

 

Session Seven

Remind client/pupil that have now looked at analysing all diary entries except feelings/body sensations.

Talk through ‘Feelings’ page. Encourage client/pupil to identify familiar body feelings and put them on a printed ‘Body Map’ worksheet.

Talk through ways of stopping/minimising body feelings.

 

Session Eight

Explain last session of Anger Management Course.

Recap course reminding client/pupil of factors that have been identified in their anger.

Explain have now looked in detail at all diary headings. Remind client/pupil of importance of being aware of these and maintaining the diary for self-analysis.

Look at successful coping strategies that have been used and remind client/pupil how far they have come along the road to managing their anger.

Explain that the course has shown them how to use and analyse incidents of anger to find coping strategies and that these should be continued even though the course has finished.
