Attention Seeking

Attention Seeking

WHAT CAN WE DO?

Pupils with low self-esteem, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and those who lack confidence may use challenging behaviour as a means of gaining the teacher’s attention for further assistance or explanation.

SO

Know your class

If you are aware of those pupils who are most likely to display challenging behaviour as a means of gaining attention, you can make a point of going over to those pupils as soon as the rest of the class are ‘on task’. By doing this they will gain the attention they desire without ‘asking’ for it through challenging behaviour.

Additional Needs Net recognises that the advice offered on this page will not stop all instances of challenging behaviour, but may improve the behaviour of some students.
