Not understanding what is expected

WHAT CAN WE DO?
As teachers, we have been to university and are academics used to academic terms and dealing with complex language. Pupils come from a wide range of backgrounds and many will have little or no understanding of complex terminology. They may not understand the school’s Behaviour Policy or classroom expectations or what they are being asked to do in class. Even more alarming is the fact that studies have shown that some pupil’s will not understand when they are being praised.
SO
Keep it simple
By explaining the Behaviour Policy, classroom expectations and task instructions in simple, everyday language, all pupils will fully understand what is expected of them and are more likely to conform. They will also have more respect for the teacher and will want to succeed in his or her class.
