Poor Literacy Skills

Some pupils will use challenging behaviour to cover up the fact that they have poor literacy skills.

Pupils who are likely to use this strategy are those who have low self-esteem and are worried that admitting to a problem with literacy will ruin their reputation.
For this reason they are also unlikely to ask the teacher for help if they do not understand what they have to do.

These pupils quickly learn that by behaving badly they will be sent out of the classroom and so will avoid having to do the work that has been set.

If they do not understand homework tasks and their parents cannot or will not help them, then they will make excuses for not completing homework or will simply not do it.
The National Literacy Strategy advocates incorporating literacy into all curriculum subjects.
Wordsearches, crosswords, displays of key words, cloze passage activities and the availability of dictionaries can all help to raise the standard of literacy of all pupils without having to single out those pupils with very poor literacy skills.
It is also important to be aware of those pupils who may have literacy difficulties and offer them support to avoid them having to ask for help.
Additional Needs Net recognises that the advice offered on this page will not stop all instances of challenging behaviour, but may improve the behaviour of some students.
