What is Online Learning?

The term 'Online Learning' refers to the practice of using a computer to access the Internet for educational purposes.
In it’s simplest form Online Learning refers to the use of the Internet to find information required as part of a lesson.
Taking this a step further, the learner would be required to present his or her findings as a word-processed publication, a Powerpoint presentation, a spreadsheet or a graph. This material may then either be printed out or mailed to the teacher using electronic mail.

Interactive lessons can be posted as web pages. These can take the form of a set of instructions for individual pupils or complete lessons which direct the pupil’s study using hyperlinks and assessment quizzes and tests. The example below is taken from History on the Net's Elizabeth I lesson.

In it’s most complex form, Online Learning involves a teacher offering ‘face-to-face’ instruction to a pupil or group of pupils through video conferencing or instant messaging.
