Home Education
Section 36 of the 1944 Education Act gives parents or legal guardians the right to educate their children at home.
Parents may choose this option for a variety of reasons:
Their children refuse to go to school
Their children are gifted
Their children have a disability or illness
On religious grounds
Due to a dispute over the school allocated to their child
Educating a child at home is not an easy option, parents have to satisfy the local authorities that the education they are providing is appropriate for the age and ability of their child.
One adult has to remain at home during the daytime, this can be problematic if both parents have to work.
Local education authorities in the UK have a legal responsibility to inspect the education that is being provided.
However,
Educating your own child can be fun.
You can learn together
Mathematics can take place in the local supermarket; biology in the park.
Support
Your local library can help with books.
Education Otherwise is a support organisation that provides help, support and resources.
